HIP HOP HAPPY

After all the excitement of Bollywood dancing, birthday party planning and a flying Volkswagen Beetle, the start of our next modern dance class was a welcome distraction. Madam Zangara dropped another bomb shell. We are going to spend the next few weeks doing some Hip Hop dancing. Now Hip Hop is not the kind of thing that is very popular in our small town. My only exposure to Hip Hop has been the wildly outrageous bum shaking I had seen in music videos. As you can imagine, this news was not a welcome surprise. Madam Zangara laughed when she saw the shocked looks on our faces. “Don’t worry, girls, this is going to be fun,” she said as she tried to contain her laughter. I am glad she found this funny! If wearing a tutu was not an option for me, then there was most certainly no way that I am going to be dancing Hip Hop in a revealing outfit.

We started out with a few basic steps, and before long we were absorbed in the complexities of combinations, counts, beats and movements. We were popping, locking and crumping to the sounds of the Black-eyed Peas. It was a chaotic, energetic beat-filled dance extravaganza. Madam Zangara is a great choreographer. I looked over at Olivia, Alexa and Melanie and they were having just as much fun as I was. By the end of the class, our bodies were aching, our arms were numb and we could not feel our legs, but we felt great.
